Loppington Players

Loppington Players are a performing arts group in Loppington, North Shropshire. They regularly hold plays, musicals and other entertainments. They received a grant of £3,500 to purchase new staging as their previous staging was difficult to use due to its age and in disrepair which prevented productions being put on.

Lally Cheeseman, Chairman of Loppington Players, said 'The new staging is fantastic. It used to take us 3 days to construct the old staging and because it was so old it wasn't very flexible. The new staging is modular and can be arranged in many ways. Thanks to Shropshire Grassroots Grants, the grant has provided us with enormous encouragement and inspiration, and will have a lasting effect for years to come'.

Craven Arms Community Food

Craven Arms Community Food is a project that aims to increase the quality and quantity of reasonably produced locally grown food, and to have a positive impact on the health and well being of consumers and producers. A community garden was developed where local residents could grow a range of vegetables and several plot holders wanted to learn more about how to get the very best from the garden and in using their produce to cook simple healthy meals. The group was awarded £745 to pay for gardening and cookery classes.

Take and Play Toy Lending Library

Shrewsbury Take and Play Toy Lending Library meets each Tuesday at Harlescott Community Centre in Shrewsbury.  It runs a weekly playgroup where local parents bring their children to play with the wide selection of toys, which are therapeutic, educational and stimulating and which they can also hire to take them home with them. There is also an opportunity for the parents and carers to socialise on a weekly basis. The group were awarded a Shropshire Grassroots Grant of £500 to purchase new toys and to cover the cost of attending a conference.  Martin McGowan, a trustee of the Take and Play Toy Lending Library praised the Grassroots Scheme saying "It has enabled us to send 2 volunteers to the National Toy Lending Library Conference in Birmingham and allowed us to replace at least half a dozen old toys with new ones, which parents wouldn't otherwise be able to afford".

Wem Angling Club

Wem Angling Club, which was founded in 1948 to serve the area of North Shropshire, currently has about 400 members.  Ordinary membership is open to anyone living within a 10 mile radius of Wem town centre, and a limited number of Associate memberships are available to people living outside the area.

As well as adults, children accompanied by responsible grown-ups, youth groups and local schools are encouraged to enjoy the facilities of the club.

Four years ago the club constructed a new Fishery just outside Wem at Tilley Green,  with 2 pools plus a smaller "kiddies" pool.  This was seen as a "dream come true" until recently it was discovered that otters were finding their way into the pools and killing large fish.  The club therefore decided to construct an otter proof fence around the 2 main pools and in January 2010 they were awarded a Grassroots Grant of £2000 to help to fund it.  Michael Williams who project managed the construction of the fence said "Fish which were previously being attacked on a nightly basis by feeding otters are now protected.  Anglers in the community will experience better fishing at Tilley Pools and will not need to annually finance expensive restocking.  This means that more people will want to join the club, particularly young people who soon lose interest if they are not catching fish".

Disabled Holiday Information

Disabled Holiday Information is a Shropshire based charity which was set up by Frank and Sue Napper in 2001 when they were looking for a suitable destination for a weekend break, bearing in mind that Frank is disabled.  They were unable to find anything suitable on the internet and so decided to do their own research, and they now provide information via their website and brochures, on a wide variety of holiday venues and leisure attractions all over the UK, which are easily accessible to people with disabilities.  The Charity also provided valuable volunteering opportunities in Shropshire, for people with disabilities to research the accessability of these venues, by carrying out site visits and then converting the information into data on their website, for people with similar needs to themselves.  In July 2010, the Disabled Holiday Information was awarded a Grassroots Grant of £4,000 to enable them to produce Guidance and Record Packs for their volunteers to use when researching and recording data. They are also able to record their skills used and their achievements when carrying out assessments.
